Safeguarding A Large Bird Feeder From Some Scavengers - Keeping The Squirrels Away From Your Wild Bird Seed

Installing a large bird feeder is a superb addition to a garden. Making sure that they're positioned the right way, nicely stocked, cleaned regularly and protected from scavengers will ensure a healthy population of wild birds to enjoy.

The feeder should be near a home for fun-filled viewing but far enough away that birds will not be terrified to come and eat the bird seed. A well placed model will have birds feeding from it almost immediately. If they are not spotted within a reasonable period of time then it may be crucial to move your bird feeder.

Your large bird feeder also must be shielded from scavengers and predators. This can include squirrels that cannot resist attacking a food source no matter where it's located. If these kinds of animals are an annoyance then a home-owner could be forced to relocate the feeder to another location. It would need to be far enough away from trees that they can't make the leap from a tree to the food. If this isn't possible because of an overabundance of trees then the only other alternative would be to purchase a squirrel-proof feeder.

There are a number of different models of this kind with one of the most popular being the tube feeder. It's a huge deterrent for squirrels because it is almost impossible for them to gain access to the food inside. This kind is great for small or huge species of wild birds and can accommodate both at the same time if needed or it may be stocked with a specific food in order to attract specific species.

The opposite type that stops squirrels from rummaging through and eating up all the seed is one which has a weighted bar on the front for birds to rest on. These bars are designed to hold the weight of a bird, but anything heavier triggers the mechanism and closes the entrance to the food. There are even ones with perches which will move because of the weight of a squirrel and dump that squirrel on the ground.

When finding your large bird feeder it must be close enough where people will be relaxing, such as out on the deck with a netbook and glass of wine in hand, to allow them to enjoy the sights and sounds of them. In case it is too close the birds will stay away. When it is too far people will be unable to see them clearly and the effect of having one will be lost unless it is your goal simply to supply a food source and not really enjoy any bird watching.
